Dry-Below Deck Systems Explained

A dry-below deck system captures rainwater that passes through deck boards and channels it away from the area below — keeping it completely dry even in heavy rain. Here's a detailed breakdown of how these systems work and what makes a good installation.

The 5 Components of a Dry-Below System

Aluminum Framing Channels

The structural base of the system. Channels are attached to the deck joists beneath the deck boards, creating a framework that holds the drainage panels at a consistent pitch toward the collection gutter.

Drainage Panels

Interlocking panels (typically aluminum or vinyl) sit in the channels and capture all water passing through the deck above. The panels are pitched so water flows toward the collection point — not pooling on top of the panels.

Collection Gutter

A dedicated gutter runs the perimeter of the underdeck system, collecting water from the drainage panels. This gutter is separate from the home's main gutter system and handles only underdeck drainage.

Downspout & Drainage Routing

Water from the collection gutter exits through a downspout that routes it away from the foundation. Proper routing — to a yard drain, dry well, or grade — is critical. Poor routing just moves the drainage problem elsewhere.

Perimeter Trim & Fascia

Aluminum fascia trims all edges of the system, covering the framing channels and collection gutter for a clean, finished appearance from below.

Why DIY Fails Here

The most common DIY attempt is a simple tarp or plastic sheet stapled to the underside of the deck. These fail quickly in Georgia because: (1) they sag and pool water rather than draining, (2) they trap moisture against the deck framing causing rot, and (3) they look terrible and don't last a season in Georgia heat.

A professional system uses engineered panels and framing designed to drain under load, resist heat expansion, and integrate with a real gutter — not a tarp.
